Tuft and Needle Mattress Review

The owners of Tuft and Needle are two guys who met at Penn State. They decided that buying a mattress shouldn’t be as hard as it currently is.  The way to create a great mattress is to listen to sleeper feedback, and that’s what they did.  As a result, they have created a unique mattress.

The Tuft and Needle 10 Inch Mattress is designed to provide support and comfort, and has received extremely high ratings by Amazon reviewers.

How firm is this mattress?

This mattress is medium-firm to firm.  Tuft and Needle rate it as a 6 out of 10 for firmness, 10 being the floor.  Most Amazon customers that rated the firmness said it was a 7.

Of course, everyone has a preference regarding firmness.  If you appreciate a firm mattress, this could be the one for you.  If you are currently sleeping on a mattress that has passed its expiry date, the initial firmness of your new mattress might take you by surprise.

A lot of Amazon reviewers stated that the mattress was too firm on the first night.  However, reviewers also noted that after the two-week break-in period the mattress had softened to medium-firm.  One reviewer stated that this is the mattress that Goldilocks would pick!

The upper comfort layer usually has enough plushness after the break-in period.  One reviewer called this mattress “firm, but not rigid”.

What if I’m a stomach sleeper?  Stomach sleepers need a mattress that is firm enough to provide support, but also has some give for your ribs and hips.  A mid- range mattress in terms of firmness is the answer.  Being medium-firm, the Tuft and Needle mattress falls into this category.

What if I’m a side sleeper?  Side sleepers are putting all of their weight on that side’s hip and shoulder.  These areas need support, but also need the mattress to give a bit.

Some Amazon side sleepers reported discomfort because they felt that the mattress was too firm, while others were comfortable from the first night.  A few of the side sleeper reviewers who felt discomfort said that a mattress topper turned their new purchase into the perfect mattress.

If, after the break-in period, you really feel that you need a mattress topper, these are the toppers suggested by Tuft and Needle:

Will my tossing and turning disturb my partner?

Localized movement means minimum disruption to sleeping partners.  Some reviewers described the mattress as forgiving and not bouncy.

Is there support around the edges of the mattress?

Tuft and Needle MattressYes, you can sit on the edge of the bed and put your shoes on.  It would only depend on the height of your bed frame.  The edge is reported to be firm, but it does sink a little when you sit on it.

Is this mattress hot to sleep on?

There are three ways that the Tuft and Needle mattress ensures that you sleep cool.

Airflow

Most foam mattresses have multiple layers to achieve the firmness expected.  This means that there are also multiple layers of glue.  The glue significantly decreases airflow, resulting in the occupant sleeping hot.

Tuft and Needle have devised a system where only two layers are required.  Since there is a lot less glue used, the mattress is able to breathe.

The glue used is rubber and water and is certified safe by Green Guard.

Cooling Gel

The support layer is infused with a cooling gel.  This will not only offer cooler sleep, but it will also assist in pressure support.

Graphite

The support layer is also infused with graphite.  Graphite is a carbon crystal and is heat conductive, which means it takes the heat away from the sleeper.

Can I use a heated mattress pad with this mattress?

Yes.  Please keep in mind that the result might be warmer than you are expecting because the mattress pad will restrict the mattress airflow.

Will this mattress help my back pain?

The specially created foam supports the physical structure of your spine.  It naturally supports your back, neck and shoulders. The customer reviews on Amazon include many comments that their back pain was reduced, or disappeared altogether.

How will our size affect the mattress comfort?

The Tuft and Needle mattress will support up to 500 lbs per sleeper and 1000 lbs per 2 person mattress.  These numbers are for the mattress only, and you would need to take the sleepers’ combined weight into account if considering a foundation or bed frame.

Within these limits, the mattress is designed so that the more pressure applied, the more support it will give.

What is the composition of this mattress?

Tuft and Needle mattresses are designed and manufactured in the USA.  The fabric is produced in an old family-owned textile mill in the Carolinas, and the mattresses are put together in Southern California.

Tuft and Needle MattressThe mattresses are constructed from Tuft and Needle’s own creation, an Adaptive Foam.  As it name suggests, it is designed to adapt to any person’s body.  It is neither memory foam nor latex.

The Tuft and Needle mattress is one-sided.  The zippered side should always be on the bottom.

Layer Components

The inside material is composed of a premium polyurethane foam that is certified by CertiPUR-US.

The 3-inch upper comfort layer is made of very high-density foam designed by Tuft and Needle.  It has a density of 2.8 pounds.

The 7-inch lower support layer is assembled with a high-density polyfoam with a density of 1.8 pounds.

Fabric cover

The cover material has surface content of 95% rayon, with the total composition being 50% rayon and 50% polyester.  The material used is certified by Oeko-Tex to be free of chemical residue, and is not bleached.

Flammability

Instead of chemicals, the Tuft and Needle mattresses uses a rayon cellulose fiber with fine grain sand and polyester.  This combination is fundamentally fire resistant, and is TB-117-2013 compliant.

Do I need to buy a foundation or bed frame, or special sheets?

No special foundation is needed.  The Tuft and Needle mattress works well on box springs, a platform frame, a wooden or carpeted floor, or with slatted bed frames, as long as the slats are no more than 4 inches apart.  If you choose a carpeted floor it is advised that you give the mattress an airing once a month by leaning it up against a wall.

If you live an area where damp and mould are a problem it is probably not a good idea to put the mattress directly on the floor.  If the floor is your only choice, it might be wise to air the bottom out by leaning it up against a wall, say, once a week.

No special sheets are required; standard sheets fit this mattress.

Is there a chemical smell from this mattress?

Most Amazon reviewers reported no chemical smell at all.  A few mentioned a “whiff” that disappeared very quickly.

Are a lot of chemicals used in the manufacture of this mattress?

No, these mattresses are free from harmful chemicals, known carcinogens and other toxic materials.  Tuft and Needle mattresses are certified safe by CertiPur.

How do I look after my Tuft and Needle mattress?

Tuft and Needle advise that there is no need to flip or rotate your mattress.  It is a one-sided mattress and the comfort layer always needs to be on top, with the zipper side on the underside.  Some reviewers say that they do rotate their mattress, but this seems to be a habit from their previous mattresses.

It is not recommended that you remove the protective cover for cleaning because there is the risk of shrinking.  It should be spot cleaned only.

If you think there is a chance of spills it might be worth investing in a breathable and moisture-resistant mattress protector.  One that is styled like a fitted sheet would be best.  Tuft and Needle recommend the SafeRest Hypoallergenic Waterproof Vinyl Free Mattress Protector.

If you want to save some space when the bed is not being used, it will fold from head to foot.  However, it will try to stretch out again.  (Wouldn’t you?)  Some twine, a couple of heavy books, or placing it in an enclosed space will stop it from unravelling.

How long does this mattress last?

Most mattresses will last for 10 to 15 years, but it is usually recommended for your comfort that it be replaced after around 10 years.

Tuft and Needle started producing mattresses in 2012, so nobody has had their mattress for 10 years yet.  Their warranty is for 10 years – see next section for details.

Amazon customers who have had their mattress for 2 years or more report that it is just as good as when it was purchased.

Tuft and Needle MattressIs there a Warranty?

Tuft and Needle offer a 10-year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship.   Decreased firmness or permanent body impressions of more than ¾” should not happen for at least 10 years, and are covered in the warranty.

Shipping

Shipping is free within the continental US.  There is a shipping charge for delivery to Alaska and Hawaii, which would not be refunded in the event of a return.

Tuft and Needle are not currently shipping to countries other than the US.

Is the mattress hard to unpack?

The mattress is compressed and vacuum packed to fit into a compact box.  It will arrive wrapped in two layers of plastic.  To avoid wrinkles, it is best to set your mattress free from its box sooner rather than later.

To unpack your mattress:

  1. Take the box to the room where it will live; don’t open it and then try to drag it up the stairs
  2. Remove it from the box
  3. Place the rolled up mattress on the end of the bed frame, or wherever you want your bed to be
  4. Cut the first layer of plastic off
  5. Roll the mattress out
  6. Ensure the zipper side is on the bottom side of the mattress. The comfort layer will then be on top
  7. VERY carefully cut the last layer of plastic off
  8. The mattress will start to expand immediately. It will reach its final size in 2 to 3 hours.

If you ever move house with your Tuft and Needle mattress, you simply move it like any other mattress.  A mattress bag will protect your mattress during the move.

Is there a trial period?

There is a 30-day trial period for you to get used to your new mattress.  This is more than enough time for the recommended 2-week “breaking-in” period.

Based on customer reviews, very few people wish to return their Tuft and Needle mattress.  In the unlikely event that you wish to make a return, it is a very easy process.

  1. Log onto your Amazon account
  2. Select “Your Account” and then “Your Orders”
  3. Find your mattress order in the list
  4. Click “Return or replace items” and follow the prompts
  5. Amazon will contact you to schedule a removal and arrange return shipping. Do not worry about repacking the mattress.  The Large Items team will be in touch, and they will look after the removal of the mattress.
  6. There will be no charge from the continental US for the return of the mattress

Customer Service

There was a low percentage of Amazon customer reviews that reported problems.  Tuft and Needle responded promptly to all of these problems.  In all cases, the answers were understanding, supportive, and provided an action plan.

On the Plus Side

  • Completely produced in the USA
  • Price is good compared to other mattresses
  • Above average customer service; from what I have seen on Amazon, I would call the customer service exceptional.
  • Great experience reported with delivery and unpacking
  • Free from harmful chemicals, fire resistant
  • Based on Amazon reviews, the mattress holds its firmness.

Some Negatives

  • The company was founded in 2012. The life cycle of a typical mattress has not yet passed.  But as time goes on, this becomes less of a problem.  Customer reviews don’t point to this fact as a negative.  In fact, the people who have had the mattress for 2 years report that it is just as good as when they purchased it.
  • There are no handles on this mattress. However, it is a one-sided mattress, which means no lifting is required once it is in place.  Delivery in a compact box means it can be placed where it is going to stay and unpacked there.
  • Some reviewers reported that a mattress topper was necessary after the break-in period. Even including this extra cost still makes this mattress a great alternative to an expensive high-end mattress.

Is this mattress right for you?

If you like a firm to medium-firm mattress that will support and comfort you, this could be the one for you.

If you are a back or stomach sleeper, and you are willing to give the mattress time to break in, this could be the right mattress.

If you are a side sleeper, it would be worth giving the mattress a go because some Amazon side sleepers have said that they are comfortable from the first night.  If it is not comfortable at the end of the breaking-in period of 2 weeks, consider purchasing a mattress topper.  Just keep in mind that a mattress topper will decrease the mattress airflow.

Overall, this mattress is rated very highly by Amazon purchasers.
